Security Office, Deck 9
Kit stepped out of the turbolift with Blake, rolling his shoulders. He was starting to feel this inspection, especially after all the forms he had been filling out in the days leading up. He hadn't been exercising as much as he should. But that would change now, he promised himself. Maybe he should work out with these people...
The doors slid open to reveal the Security Office and Kit stepped inside with Blake, looking at Masters. "Inspection," he said, to clarify, giving the man a nod.
The moment Daniel saw the doors open and both Blake and Hanlon began to step through he stood up from his chair. "Captain, Commander." He greeted them both.
" 'Commander,'" Blake tilted her head to him, but quickly cast her eyes around the Security Office. There were some familiar faces here, some that weren't yet, but would be soon. Engineering was the heart of the ship, but the life and death of a ship weighed just as heavy on Security's shoulders. "Report."
"Only a third of my staff have arrived yet, what I do have are settling in well, we've taken inventory of our hand held weapons, we're fully stocked, torpedo magazines are full and secured." Daniel began his report.
Blake glanced to her First Officer as Daniel gave his assessment. She was less than happy about the Security staffing situation, even if it was currently out of their hands. Despite her feelings on the matter, her expression remained both inscrutable and calm. "Commander Hanlon?" her tone of voice was deceptively soft, but it was clear she expected to be told that he was on top of it.
"The last of the security team are expecting to arrive within the week," Kit said as he looked at her. "There have been some returning deep space ships who have transfers, so it has slowed things down for everyone deploying."
Blake nodded in acknowledgement of the explanation, but not with any kind of approval or happiness for it. On the contrary, the ex-marine was all too aware of how key the ship's security force was to both the safety of the crew and mission operations. "I take it that once they've arrived you will be able to get them up to speed and drilled within the tight timeframe?" she addressed Daniel...and it was clear by her tone it wasn't so much a question as an expectation.
"I believe so Sir, we have a training regimen in the works for when they arrive." Daniel replied. "They'll be up and running by the time we get to wherever we're going."
Blake gave a brisk nod, taking him at his word; he was a veteran with a wealth of experience to draw on after all. "How is the armoury looking?" she asked, wanting to ensure they had been adequately provisioned. And that the answer wasn't 'empty'.
"Well stocked. We have 30 type one phasers, enough type two's for all 170 of us, 60 phaser rifles mostly type 3b's but a few older 3a's." Daniel replied. "There's also 2 cases of photon grenades, 1 of stun grenades and a bunch of assorted close combat weapons. Might be able to scrounge up an isomagnetic disintegrator if you want one"
Despite her usual professional demeanour, the slightest grin threatened at Blake's lips. She cleared her throat, giving a wry shake of her head. "No, that won't be necessary," there was a slight gleam of humour in her eye all the same. "We'll be running a full systems test, but is there anything that concerns you about your new set up?"
"The Norway class has good maneuverability but no aft torpedo launcher is quite a disadvantage, though ablative armour over most of the hull will keep us in the fight longer." Daniel shook his head slightly. "She's no Sovereign but I think she'll put up a good fight if it comes to it, I'll have a better assessment after we've seen her in action."
Kit chuckled at the way Daniel had said it. "A ship is only as good as her crew after all," he said. He was certain a Norway class with a good crew could outfight most other ships, even if he did not want to test that.
"But you make a valid point," Blake conceded to Daniel, a frown threatening on her features as she considered the problem for a moment. "I know you'll be planning drills and training sessions anyway, but let's get holodeck training time scheduled in specifically for working around that disadvantage."
Gabriel Stark glanced across to his new Chief where he stood to attention at his console, musing the conundrum that had been brought up. The young man's own strengths laid in security more than tactical, but it would be an interesting challenge to get to grips with.
"Aye Sir, we will look into it." Daniel told his Captain.
Aria watched them with a small smile, shifting where she stood, almost excitedly. She had been silent so far...and that was hard for her.
"And it won't hurt to look at who needs a phaser recertification and get those underway," Kit added as he looked at Daniel, meeting his eyes. "Once we are out of spacedock."
"Sounds like a job for you Lt Rice." Daniel said without looking back to his assistant chief.
Aria smiled at that, giving an easy nod. "Yeah, all good. I'll get them all through it. After all, a crew that are accredited to fire a phaser are less likely to stun themselves, right?"
"I shall take you at your word, Lieutenant Rice," Blake replied lightly, but the note of dry humour was probably still detectable to her old friend. They'd worked together long enough in the past for her to know that anyone who took the petite officer at face value was in for a shock. "Is there anything else that should be brought to our attention?"
Petty Officer Beon looked on with his customary stern expression, his eyes piercing in their watch of the group. He looked nothing but professional on the outside - intense, yes, but professional - but on the inside, he was wishing beyond anything that no one asked or offered any new topic for discussion so they could all get on with life.
Aria looked over at her Chief, raising an eyebrow in question. She didn't have anything that was pressing, or even remotely important, but the Chief might have a different idea.
"I know I'll probably think of something the moment the doors close behind you but for now, no Sir." Daniel said with a slight shake of the head
"Very well," Kit said and looked over at Blake, giving her a small smile. Nothing for their attention was a good sign, and no one looked like they were going to put their hands up and ask for anything else.
Blake nodded in agreement to the silent proposal from her First Officer to wrap up. "Carry on," she affirmed before leading the way out, waiting for the doors to close behind them before addressing Kit. "Quite the team. I look forward to seeing what they're made of..."
