Operations, Deck 8
At least the walk from Main Engineering to the Operations Office wasn't long. Kit looked down at the PADD in his hand, checking it before he led them to the office. The doors opened and Vansen looked up from where he was working, recognising the ranks and stood. "Captain. Sir..."
"Inspection," Kit said and looked over at Evans, giving the man a slight nod.
“Sir” Evans stood from the console he was working at. “Welcome to the ops office” he smiled with his hands folded behind his back.
Blake bowed her head slightly at the warm welcome, tugging her jacket straight as she stopped to take the environment in. Of course, she'd already been here, but it felt so different now. Alive. So much of what they did depended on the smooth running of Ops. When survival could literally depend on a split second decision or be lost to a moment's delay, it was crucial that Ops remained agile and efficient. "How are you finding it, 'Commander?"
“We’ve completed most of our diagnostics early” Chris was mentally going over what he needed to report to the command staff. “I have a team working in a few of the relays. Lieutenant Lopez thinks she can get another five percent efficiency when transferring power.” The operations chief checked a PaDD “we are however still awaiting the arrival of two of our people. A crewman Calvin Ross and Ensign Tarro.”
"Understood," Kit gave Chris a small nod, looking around. "We are still waiting on some personnel, hopefully they will be here in time for departure." Not that he was worried, because he wasn't. Shuttles were a thing too after all.
"Well sir" Chris paused for a second and smiled "if they do not arrive before departure, my department will still be ready and we will make the best of it." There was another brief pause "double shifts or whatever is required."
"We will have your crew on time," Kit said, meaning it as he met his eyes. "No one will be doing double shifts on a new launch ship. You have my word."
"I appreciate that sir" Evans gave a smile and a nod.
"Do you have any concerns over power efficiencies in regards to the consequences of the refit?" Blake asked softly, her gaze drifting to the readouts on one of the consoles for a moment. Just because she'd had assurances on the subject from other departments, it didn't mean that Ops didn't have its own take on the situation.
"I do" Evans moved over to the console and pulled up the current read outs of the power efficiencies. "However I feel by the time we launch, the team I have working on it will have most of the kinks worked out." Evans was confident in his team, even though he had only known them a few days.
"That's good," Kit said with a nod, taking in the information. "I am sure Engineering will be eager to help with that for the tests."
“Yes sir we have been working closely with our friend in engineering” the Chief Operations Officer offered a smile and nod.
"It's regrettable we don't have the Chief Engineer onboard yet," Blake conceded, a hint of a sigh apparent in the way she spoke. In truth, it bothered her far more than she was willing to share with her crew. She was content to keep the burden of that little anxiety to herself. "But when they arrive, I would like for you both to schedule a meeting sooner rather than later to make sure everyone's on the same page."
“Aye” Evans agreed “I have made a trip to engineering to see if I could be of any use.”
"Perfect," Blake's approval was clear; she appreciated officers who took the initiative. "And you and your team have all the equipment and resources you need to be ready for launch?"
“All equipment accounted for, yes sir” Chris said with a nod.
Blake nodded her approval, rolling her shoulders back just a touch as she looked across the team. "I'd like you to organise some training for your team as soon as is feasible. Specifically around damage control during battle. Let's make sure everyone is as familiar with their new ship and team as possible." Of course, holotraining wasn't a patch on learning under real fire, or at least, she was a firm believer of that. But it would be a useful exercise to get the new team gelling at the very least.
“Aye” he checked his schedule quickly “we can start around thirteen hundred hours the day after tomorrow.”
Blake chuckled, arching an eyebrow at the rapid suggestion, looking across to Kit with a small smile of amusement. "The perks of being the Chief of Operations," she teased lightly. "Very good, Lieutenant Evans."
Evans offered a polite nod but remained silent.
Kit nodded as well. "We will let you get back to it," he said, knowing that they still had other departments to inspect...and Evans and his department had given a good impression in his eyes. Done well.
“Thank you, sirs” Evans said with a smile and nod watching his superiors exit his department.
Petty Officer Jace Pim let out a soft breath of relief before he could stop himself. A small, good natured smile came to the Trill as he looked to his new Chief, tilting his head towards him as if to say 'great job, Sir'. Because any inspection that ended with approving nods rather than extra work was good with him.
Vansen let out a breath, looking over at Pim before he grinned. "Now, let's see if we can avoid messing up all the good will we've gathered, right?" he said and stretched his back.
Chris smiled "hard work pays off."
