Mission:
To Boldly Go
Location: Shuttle Bay 1 - Deck 4 - USS Fenrir
Timeline: Day 6, 12:00
ON:
Shuttle Bay 1, Deck 4
Commander Kit Hanlon looked over at Captain Blake as they walked down the corridor heading to shuttle bay 1. It was time for the inspection. All Department Heads had been warned in advance that it could happen any day. They had given it a day to give the crew time to get to grips with things and while Kit didn't expect everything to be perfect pre system tests, he still had standards he expected everyone to follow. And due to Flight Control being spread between an office, two shuttle bays and the bridge, he had sent word to Lieutenant Azree Kar to gather her people in shuttle bay 1 for the inspection.
The doors opened and he smiled, looking at the shuttle there, taking a moment to appreciate it. Brand new shuttles were rare and these were gleaming.
95% of her department was assembled in shuttle bay 1 for the inspection, save for a select few that had duty shifts, including the duty helmsman on the bridge. Everyone else was down here, hurrying the get the shuttles and other flight systems in tip-top shape. Everything was looking good and then as soon as she saw the Commander's enter the room she barked, "Captain on deck!" Azree stood at attention before her department followed.
Hanlon gave a small smile at how straight the Flight Control crew were standing. Proper attention, not the more relaxed stance many Starfleet personnel took. He always considered pilots a bit of a different breed.
Blake gave a brisk nod, coming to a stand still in front of them, her hands clasped neatly behind her back. The military background was clear in the way she held herself, watching the crew before her with approval. They would all, at one time or another, have their life in the hands of these pilots. "At ease," she said softly. "Status, Lieutenant?"
Lieutenant Kar relaxed and folded her hands behind her back in a parade rest like fashion. "All Flight department personnel present and accounted for, including those currently on watch shifts. All small craft is accounted for and up to date on maintenance. All shuttle bays are arranged accordingly for ship and mission parameters. As for our main flight systems, they are in working order, but we will be able to test them fully once we are in space."
Blake nodded as she moved a few steps towards the aforementioned shuttles, casting her eye over them. She was a competent pilot herself, but by no means an expert in the way a trained Flight Control specialist was. "And do you approve of the small craft we have been appointed?" she asked, clearly expecting an honest answer.
"I do Captain" Azree said as she handed Blake a pad with the status of the small craft. "We'll still make checks up to launch to ensure they are operating as they are supposed to be."
"Good," Hanlon said with a nod, giving her a small smile. "I suspect given your department, they'll fight over who will test them." He knew there were a few fighter pilots in the mix.
Blake nodded in agreement with her First Officer, knowing the talent they had assembled. "We will be relying on you to design and lead the training exercise for your team before we leave," she made clear to Azree, but she had the feeling that the experienced pilot would be more than happy with that arrangement.
Azree grinned. Any chance to fly small craft was nice. It was the next best thing to a fighter. "I'd be happy to Captain."
Hanlon smiled as well, looking at Azree. "Glad to hear it," he said, because that was the truth. It was good to have people who were happy to be there, and eager to do a good job. He looked at Blake, meeting her eyes for a moment. In case she had any further questions.
"And let's see to it that all shuttles are stocked with double emergency rations, while we have the luxury," Blake nodded with a slight frown, having spent more than enough time adrift in a shuttle to know it was better to be over prepared than under. "Anything else, Lieutenant?"
The Trill thought for a moment. "I don't have anything else as of now ma'am. I'll begin those preparations for the training exercises ready as the inspection is over."
Blake gave a brisk nod but looked to Kit to see if there was anything he'd like to add or ask before they left Azree to her new kingdom.
Kit gave a small smile, but had nothing to add. "Then we should let you get to it, Lieutenant," he said with a nod.
From her place across the 'bay, Lt JG Sybine Elytt let out a soft breath of relief as the seniors rounded up to take their leave. Despite her Betazoid senses telling her that the mood in the room had remained good natured throughout, she knew better than to count her blooms before they'd grown. It seemed safe enough at this point though to assume all was well and they wouldn't be set to work through the night on any last minute changes.
Sylver relaxed his shoulders a little, glad that the formal parts were done. Sure, there were things to do, a lot...but it felt good to know the inspection was done.
"Thank you sirs" Azree returned the nod to her superior officers as she watched them begin to leave.
Blake glanced across to Kit as they took their leave, nodding to him with a small but genuine smile. She'd been impressed with how at home the team already looked in their new shuttlebay - and how calm. She hadn't picked up on a single moment of fluster or frustration. "If every department is as efficient as this one, we'll be back in time for martinis..."
